Service Opportunities

Karma yoga, or good deeds in service of others, is considered one of the most accessible paths to liberation.

By performing selfless acts of service (seva) with joy and without egoic attachment to results, we liberate ourselves from self judgement and from constrictions of roles. We serve our community. Many yoga communities have built in karma yoga positions in the form of workstudy, which may involve reception work, cleaning, laundry, or food service in the case of residential sites.

On this page I will offer some links to my local community and offer encouragement to others to share opportunities via email which I will then add!

Suggested Karma Yoga Acts:

Planting trees

Trees help us all to breathe and beautify communities. The Arbor Day is offering 10 free trees to any member who purchases a $10 membership. Plant some, give some away, take care of our local biosphere!

Serving food
Many communities have local organizations which sponsor food kitchens, please ask around to determine what you may be able to offer in your area.

Homeless shelters, churches and temples as well as boys and girls clubs often have opportunities. Food Not Bombs is a national service organization which may have a branch in your area: http://foodnotbombs.net/new_site/

Mentor Youth

Some of us are busy with our own children or teaching during the day! For others who may want to offer youth support, many schools and after school organizations have space for volunteers. Big Brothers, Big Sisters is a good organization to contact if you don’t have ties to your neighborhood school.
